Message | My father, Corporal Floyd L Hamm, was in the Sokkogae area, Korea War July 11, 1953. He saved many lives that day. He was in Company L, 32d Infantry. I am proud to say that he is a hero. Floyd and his comrades were engaged in bitter battles with enemy forces. Due to the devastating enemy fire, Corporal Hamm's unit was suffering heavy casualties. Disregarding his own personal safety, Corporal Hamm continued applying effective first aid and directing the evacuation thoughout the battle, saving many lives. Just before leaving the area, Corporal Hamm screened the trenches and bunkers to ensure that everyone had been evacuated. The heroic action of my father Corporal Hamm reflects great credit on himself and the military service. He was in 2d squad, 1st platoon, displayed outstanding courage. When four men got wounded, he voluntateered to evacuate them to a personnel carrier. During the evacuation he kept up their morale by talking with them. After the men were in the carrier it received a direct hit from enemy artillery fire, but Cpl. Hamm stayed in the carrier and gave assistance to the wounded. He then took them back to the check point for further evacuation to the hospital. After the men were cared for at the check point, he returned to his squad and kept them in position until the platoon withdrew at approximately 1600 hours. My father saved two of the men that were wounded seriously. They might have otherwise died. I am so proud to say he is my father. May he rest in peace. All my love. - His oldest daughter, Tena marie Hamm Smith. He passed away March 27, 1976. |

Message | My mom Katherine (Katie) Marie Schmidt had a brother , George Schmidt, 656 West Salem Street, Glendale, CA, who was KIA in Korea, March of 1952. He was a Sgt. and received the silver star. Like so many survivors, my mom would never talk about this. Her older brother Charles Mathison SIC, was KIA on the Battleship Arizona at the bombing of Pearl Harbor. We (my brother Jack and sister Karen) did not discover much about Uncle George or Uncle Charles till mom passed away in 2006 and we discovered personal items mom had kept on her two brothers. Would dearly love to find out what uncle George did to earn the Silver Star |

Message | I served on the western coridor in Korea about 6 klicks from the Z from 84 - 88. It was no picnic even in those days. We would roll to positions along the Imjin and cover withdrawal for other units. A very tense and exciting time. Lost some good guys there and will never forget the alert siren as long as I live God bless all. ssgt Flood |
